Total Defence Day 2011

Total Defence Day is commemorated annually on 15 February. The theme for this year’s Total Defence Day is “Home – Keeping It Together”. The focus is on why we need to defend Singapore: simply because this is our Home and we all have a part to play to keep it together.  A week prior to Total Defence Day, the Primary 4 teachers took turns to share on the 5 aspects of Total Defence using a variety of resources  such as Powerpoint slides and video clips.  In addition to the teachers’ sharing, performances by Act 3 entitled ‘Our Flag Flies High’ and Singapore Discovery Centre entitled ‘Coming Home’, were both engaging and interesting ways of teaching our pupils the significance of Home, as well as love for our nation, Singapore.
There was also an assembly talk for the afternoon session by the National Fire and Civil Emergency Preparedness Council.  It was an interesting and engaging talk on fire safety.

However, the highlight of the day was when the male teachers came to school on the eve of and on Total Defence Day itself, all dressed in their military uniforms. The pupils were all excited when they went on stage to share with them the units they were once in and what their roles and responsibilities were. This enthralled the pupils as they heard from their own teachers sharing their experiences as military personnel.
It was indeed a very special and exceptional Total Defence Day for our pupils and staff.
